Reinforce Technology FRP Now Carries ASTM E84 Fire Test Results.

Fire performance is the most common objection raised against FRP in building and infrastructure specification. The objection is legitimate: standard FRP formulations are combustible, and that matters in occupied buildings, enclosed process facilities, and any application where a regulatory fire classification is a procurement requirement. The answer is fire-retardant FRP, and the question that follows is always: tested to what standard? Reinforce Technology's FR-grade FRP products now carry ASTM E84 test results. Here is what ASTM E84 measures, what the classifications mean, and what this means for specifying FRP in fire-classified environments.

ASTM E84, the Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials, is the primary fire test standard used to assess how materials behave in a fire exposure scenario. The test evaluates two surface burning characteristics: the Flame Spread Index, which measures how quickly flames travel across a material's surface, and the Smoke Developed Index, which quantifies the amount of smoke generated during burning. The test method exposes a sample approximately 7.3 metres long and 508mm wide to a controlled propane flame for ten minutes in a Steiner tunnel, and the results are expressed as numerical indices referenced against red oak and fibre-cement board as calibration materials.

The classifications that result from ASTM E84 testing are used throughout the International Building Code and the NFPA Life Safety Code as the basis for interior finish material acceptance. Materials with a Flame Spread Index of 0 to 25 and a maximum Smoke Developed Index of 450 meet the requirements for Class A, the highest rating possible. Class B covers materials with a Flame Spread Index of 26 to 75. Class C covers materials with a Flame Spread Index of 76 to 200. Materials that exceed Class C limits are not accepted as interior finish materials under the IBC and NFPA 101 for most occupied building applications.

Reinforce Technology's fire-retardant FRP products have now been tested to ASTM E84. The test results confirm that our FR-grade FRP achieves the Flame Spread Index and Smoke Developed Index values required for building and infrastructure fire classification under the ASTM E84 framework. This gives specifiers, project engineers, and procurement teams the independently tested fire performance data they need to include Reinforce Technology FR-grade FRP in fire-classified applications — with documented test results rather than material data sheet claims.

What ASTM E84 Measures — and What It Does Not

ASTM E84 is a surface burning characteristics test. It measures how quickly flame spreads across the surface of a material and how much smoke that burning generates. It does not measure heat transmission through the tested surface, the effect of aggravated flame spread behaviour of an assembly resulting from the proximity of combustible walls and ceilings, and it does not classify or define a material as non-combustible by means of a flame spread index by itself. It is a comparative surface burning test, not a structural fire resistance test and not a non-combustibility test. Non-combustibility is a separate classification requiring different test methods.

For FRP secondary infrastructure in building and facility applications — cable management, secondary structural framing, grating, and access systems — ASTM E84 surface burning classification is the test that determines whether the material meets the interior finish requirements of the applicable building code and fire safety standard. It is the test that project engineers, fire safety consultants, and building control authorities require to be satisfied before FR-grade FRP secondary infrastructure can be accepted in fire-classified areas of occupied buildings, process facilities, and enclosed infrastructure.

Where FR-Grade FRP with ASTM E84 Results Is Specified

The fire performance question arises most frequently in the applications where FRP's other properties — non-conductivity, corrosion immunity, non-magnetic behaviour, light weight — are most compelling but where the installation is within or adjacent to an occupied building or an enclosed facility with a regulatory fire classification requirement. The availability of ASTM E84 test results for Reinforce Technology FR-grade FRP directly addresses the fire performance requirement in these applications without compromising the other properties that make FRP the correct secondary specification.

In AI data centres and high-density server facilities, FR-grade FRP cable management routes the DC power distribution and signal cabling of high-density server rooms in a non-conductive, corrosion-immune cable management system that also satisfies the fire classification requirements of the data centre's interior finish specification. In offshore platform occupied modules and temporary refuge areas, FR-grade FRP grating and secondary structural profiles provide the non-sparking, non-magnetic access infrastructure that offshore topsides require, in a fire-retardant formulation that satisfies the SOLAS and MODU Code fire classification requirements for occupied and safety-critical areas. In hospital and pharmaceutical facility secondary structural framing, FR-grade FRP structural profiles provide the non-magnetic secondary framing required in MRI suite environments and the corrosion-immune framing required in sterile and wash-down environments, in a fire-retardant formulation that satisfies the building control fire classification for hospital interior finishes.

In each of these applications, the ASTM E84 test result is the documented evidence that transforms FR-grade FRP from a material with claimed fire-retardant properties into a material with independently tested fire performance data that can be submitted to building control, project QA systems, and fire safety consultants as part of a compliant secondary infrastructure specification package.

Fire performance is a legitimate constraint on FRP specification in occupied and enclosed environments. ASTM E84 is the standard test that measures surface burning characteristics — Flame Spread Index and Smoke Developed Index — and produces the classification that building codes and fire safety standards require for interior finish materials. ASTM E84 is a surface burning characteristics test and does not classify materials as non-combustible or assess structural fire resistance. Final confirmation of the applicable fire classification requirement for any specific application remains the responsibility of the appointed fire safety engineer and the relevant building control or regulatory authority.
